The right location of Return Air Grills in Air Conditioning Systems
Many customers complain about the air circulation and time-consuming process of cooling and heating their place by their Air Conditioning Systems in different seasons. They are also concerned about their electricity bills and efficiency of their systems. The following hints might be helpful in resolving the issue.
A rule of thumb is that cold air is heavier than warm air, so in the air circulation cold air automatically always falls to the floor, while warm air goes up to the ceiling area. As a result, the designer of the system should distinguish between the location of return air grill in cold and hot seasons.
On the other hand, it is not possible to change the location of return air grill after implementation in practice, so in a well-designed and efficient Air Conditioning system two different return air grills should be considered and installed for the system, one in the ceiling for summer and the other one near the floor for winter to maximise the air circulation and efficiency of the system.
To control the high and low return air grills in different seasons, the designer can employ some motors integrated to the mode of the system, Cooing or Heating, to open and close grills’ vents respectively.
